College Life

So finally I'm going to write about the good stuff in college. I was going through my old posts yesterday and believe me it's fun. Some of the posts were actually pretty funny(oh come on! I'm not vain, some of them were funny...had funny bits here and there..same difference). I was going through the college death series and boy does my college suck or what! I was told in CL that you should never say bad things about your school(s) or college(s), it doesn't leave a good impression. I'd laughed my ass off when I heard that, what's good about this dump!! It puzzled and amused me for a while but the teacher sounded serious so I began thinking on it and could actually come up with some things worth mentioning(or I'd just make up everything if I were asked about it an interview). I don't think I can give a year-by-year rundown this time, not enough material to go by. Also, I may be a bit prejudiced and over-expectant because of my school and my short stint in DU, and may ignore some aspects which are worth mentioning.

I'll start off with the things that everybody finds good. The Library is wonderful(air-conditioned plus comfy chairs), there aren't too many classes(read any classes earlier, sadly we have to attend all of them now), ummmm it has a STEP and ITBI block which other than us only an IIT and an IIM have(pretty major!), ummmmm that's it?! Guess so....sigh. Well these things don't really contribute to college life as such but they give it a less dump-like feel, sort of. There are various places to hang out, namely FP(flag post), FFC(canteen), OC(old canteen), there used to be a nice hilly lawn which has made way for an auditorium now, and by far the most favoured - The Parking. We even had a No Parking community on Orkut and had loads of fun there(it was deleted by the owner sadly). Then there are various societies/clubs in the college which add that extra bit of life now and then. Ofcourse there is the magazine, but the college doesn't really have much to do with it. I'm a part of Lingua Franca as I've mentioned before and it is fun in a different way(I can order people around and tell them off while doing nothing myself!!). When you conduct a successful event, the satisfaction and applause/praise(if any) is reward enough. There's also the pre-event excitement and work(not really..for me atleast, I'm the VP!) which gives me that college life feeling. Staying back in college till late evening for an event and after it is great. Actually, to me it seems the college comes to life in the evening only. The carefree attitude, the relaxed conversations, the jokes and the laughter all round, there certainly is a buzz around. But I don't get to stay that late too often :( sigh....

Anyways, moving on to the people. This is the tricky part. There are people who have contributed to both college life and death(as I like to call it) for me. There are many who've just killed it for me, but there are very few who've kept it alive. Probably because these people haven't changed or turned out to be something that they weren't originally and I've stuck with them throughout(and vice versa). There's no point mentioning the ones who've killed it, spoils the mood. There are some who've sprouted ugly heads mid-way and it's best to forget those experiences. The problem is you can't! You thought they were something they clearly are not and it leads to various ego problems and long SMS wars of sort, or IM battles or hanging up rudely and then bitching and back-biting later. People say it's a part of growing up. I think I'm learning diplomacy and politics. You have to be friends with people even though you hate their guts just because "it does not look nice". !! I thought the whole point of friendship was to be able to select who your friends were. But I guess all that did help me grow up and it was a part of college life after all which I think(I hope to God!) everyone has to go through. Then later you can reminisce and joke about it with your real friends.

Another good thing about the college is it's location. There are loads of malls and cineplexes around and due to the lack of classes there was always time to catch a movie somewhere or to grab a bite somewhere else. This resulted in empty pockets and fighting bankruptcy for quite a sizeable portion of the month for which the allowance is warranted. Part of life. But I had the fortune(pun not intended) of having friends who always had 'some' extra cash on the side which I could borrow and return by next semester. Yeah I spend a lot and still owe various people around 2k. Hope they don't remember now. Then there are small things like treats for any reason possible(I'm sure you've been there too), the semester exam panic, pre-result rumours, post-result euphoria(mostly) and stuff.

The most important thing for me is that I've changed by leaps and bounds after coming to college. From being just another kid in school, I think I'm actually somebody(I hope) in college and people might still recognise me a few years later. I used to be an introvert, shy and keeping to myself and my friends. Talking to a stranger felt like a daring task(yeah I was that pathetic). Now I can go upto strangers(even women) and talk with ease. I've begun to take responsibilities and make decisions on my own and have even started giving advice to people. So I've grown and changed for the better and I owe it to my college. There I said it.

I don't think I've been able to document it as well as I'd wanted to because there are really some good things about college which I'm surely going to miss. But the key word here is SOME. Only some, few.

P.S. - For people who disagree, take it out by posting a comment.
