My first day

It's official, my brother is going to the same college as I did studying the same subject I did. Talk about following one's footsteps! Anyway, it was his first day and unlike me he had many helping hands. Thanks to .........

It was a Saturday. I'll start from the moment I left home. I got on a bus which was heading in the right direction according to my calculations. I had just left DU so was still in possession of the lovely DTC Pass which allows free travel on any route. One guy was caught for not buying the ticket and fined 100 bucks! I was not sure about where I had to get off and in the hesitation I missed a stop that looked familiar. Later I found out from a fellow passenger that I had indeed missed the right stop but I could reach my destination by an alternate route. That meant getting down on the last bus stop by which time the bus had emptied and I was sure I was lost. When I got down I saw lots of autorickshaw type things, bigger than usual, filled with people. I waited for a relatively empty one and enquired if it would go to my college. A friendly passenger replied that it would indeed go there. On the way I found out that he too was a first year student and a very friendly one at that. His name was Manmeet and he was officially the first guy I met in college.

I asked my way around to get to my class. I was probably looking very puzzled because Saurabh himself approached me and asked if I was new and belonged to this class. He showed me to his seat and we made our introductions. Just then the teacher walked in and everyone settled down for the first lesson of the day. She started off by saying how human everyone looked as the Dress Code for the freshers had ended. I was curious as to how bad it must have been and relieved that I didn't see any part of it. She started talking about stuff in the text book which I didn't have about a subject which I couldn't quite recognize. It wasn't maths or electronics or physics or anything close. I asked Saurabh what she was teaching and he said in a matter-of-factly tone, "English". I was dumbfounded for one moment but very happy in the next. My favourite subject and I thought I would never study such a thing again. It was fun, the teacher asked a few questions and I answered and by the end of the hour she knew who I was. Good start I thought.

I don't remember much of the day after that (don't think it went as well as the first hour), except maybe Computer Lab which was another one of my good subjects (do you see a pattern here?). I met my classmate from school during the break and a few of the new friends he had made already. I also met some people whom I had met in other colleges as well in search of getting admission somewhere. Not a very memorable first day or it could just be my bad memory.

I miss college now, badly. Sometimes very badly. There just can't be better times ahead because college life is pretty hard to beat.

Points: 1000 points to ......... for being an angel (she doesn't like to be thanked for some reason!).

-10,000 points to everyone, including me, who despised college when they were there.
