Modesty: n. Lack of vanity or self-importance
If I were completely and truly modest, then there wouldn't be much to read on this blog. The thing about modesty is that it's an oxymoronish quality if you think about it. There are a lot of "modest people" out there but I think that there are only a very small number of actually, truly and honestly modest people in the world. I mean you wouldn't expect these people to say one good thing about themselves that would impress you or make you feel that the person you're talking to is a person worth talking to.
How does one decide whether the deed they have done is good or not so good? Well, if it's worth telling people about it, letting them know that you did it then it's a good thing. And if you're a sadist then it holds true for the not so good ones too. Some people might keep these things to themselves just to give themselves the satisfaction of being a modest person. That's just vanity in another form if you ask me. Some people let you know what they've done in the subtlest manner possible, maintaining the modest outlook and satisfying personal vanity at the same time.
In today's world, modesty is impractical. It has become an over-rated virtue. A big-shot donates millions to charity and lets the whole world know about it. The donation was made in the first place because the whole world would come to know about it and talk about the person who made it. Modest people aren't famous and famous people were never modest. Call me a cynic, but it seems like every good deed must be having an element of vanity attached to it. Unless it is done out of love, which seems to be the only truly modest way of doing good.
Somehow this post doesn't feel complete to me. Anyways, I've started enjoying blogging all over again. Thanks to my loyal fan base who just can't get enough of me :P .......It's hard not to talk about yourself, isn't it?
P.S. - Unlike the post titled Perception, I'm going to mention that this thought was inspired by a conversation I was having with Garima. So much for modesty. LOL
Points for today: 100 points to Garima for the conversation which lead to this post.
131 points to Boston Celtics for beating the LA Lakers and another 262 points for becoming the World Champions.
500 points to Schweinsteiger and Germany for demolishing Portugal.
1000 fake points to Ronaldo and Nani(Ronaldo Jr., who got lucky with a cross) for....err....trying.

Some very nice quotes:
"Modesty is the only sure bait when you are fishing for praise." - Anonymous
"Modesty antedates clothes and will be resumed when clothes are no more. Modesty died when clothes were born. Modesty died when false modesty was born." - Mark Twain (I just love his quotes)
"It is easy for a somebody to be modest, but it is difficult to be modest when one is a nobody." - Jules Renard
“At least I have the modesty to admit that lack of modesty is one of my failings.” - Jules-Hector Berlioz
